Free Resources

Enjoy these free ‘Science of Writing’ resources that form the core of Releasing Writers. We ask that copyright be respected, that they not be used for commercial gain, but be used directly with students you teach.
These materials were created by Dr. Leslie Laud. They are registered in her name at the U.S. Copyright Office. TIDE is a derivation of TDC which Dr. Laud created in March, 2012 and was thrilled to see researchers then adapt to TIDE and study extensively. POWER comes from Dr. Carol Sue Englert, adapted to POWRE then POWeR by Dr. Laud.

Below you will find essentially a starter kit of materials to help you launch think SRSD.
(Lesson 0) Collect a pre-assessment before you start instruction
Lesson 1: Introduce key strategies (POWER, TIDE) and show an exemplar response to the pre
Lesson 2: Model using the strategies and graphic organizers as scaffolds (to be faded).
Lesson 3: Model scoring writing and setting goals, which deepens your students’ understanding of the features they will aim to then produce
Note: Lesson 1 is ‘one and done’. Over time, you repeat Lessons 2 & 3, but you will gradually release how much modeling you lead and encourage students to begin to write on their own.

About Us

Releasing Writers is the original and largest community of expert teachers and researchers who support and study the Science of Writing, including self-regulated strategy development (SRSD) use in schools across the nation. We offer in-person professional development and e-learning courses taught by classroom teachers and school-based coaches with decades of experience and proven school gains. We began offering the very first open enrollment course in SRSD in 2008, then expanded to include courses that address further areas of writing and a broader framework that integrates multiple evidence-based practices.
